Tailgunner Brewing Company: Calgary’s Newest Craft Brewery Opens Today
After a year of searching for the best home, Tailgunner Brewing Company has finally opened its doors.
This latest addition to Calgary’s craft beer scene opened its doors today in the heart of the Sunalta community at 1602 – 10th Avenue Southwest.
This is not an April Fool !
This new room is a large open space with long communal tables, a massive garage door, and a large “Remember” script written on the wall.
“Tailgunner Brewing Co. is for anyone who longs for a sense of community, belonging and tradition,” Cael Tucker, co-founder of Tailgunner Brewing, said in a press release.
“This is a place where craft beer lovers can expect the highest quality beer our generation has to offer because we believe in honoring the greatest generation.”
Tailgunner’s menu is a mix of pub-style fare and savory bites, perfect for a table full of craft beers.
Toasted sandwiches with kettle fries and homemade dip make for a great meal, as do the beautifully prepared charcuterie plates, ideal for groups.
There are also many different types of dips, to be enjoyed with hot pits, fresh tortilla chips, or both.
The inspiration for the brews and beers comes from the heroic story of Lint Stephenson, the grandfather of brewery co-founder Mike MacLeod.
Lint Stevenson was a tail gunner in World War II. When his bomber plane was shot down, he was the only survivor and was imprisoned by Nazi forces.
For two and a half years he endured torture and starvation before returning to Canada at the end of the war. He founded a family that now dedicates this brewery to his sacrifices and bravery.
Owners MacLeod and Tucker, along with Head Brewer Blake Enemark, have already made a huge impact on the craft beer scene, with award winners already available at many bars and tap houses in Alberta and beyond.
Beers like Lint Stephenson Czech Pilsner, Dame Dorthey Hazy Pale Ale, Ross Dixon Dry-Hopped Lager and Bombshell Altbier are favorites.
With over 10 taps as well as bottled and canned beer, this will be the place to be in Calgary for a cold beer. Being so close to the river, the beers will go down even easier in the summer when the garage doors open and the beautiful patio is ready.
