The news of the suspension of beer production and all alcohol sales in Nuevo León from Friday shocked consumers, sending many heading to alcohol vendors for their supplies.

Governor Jaime Rodríguez Calderón announced Thursday morning at a Covid-19 update press conference that brewing beer is not considered an essential activity as defined by the Covid-Emergency Declaration. 19 of the federal government, calling the decision to stop production “logical”.

But talk of a ban seemed to trump his call to refrain from panicking while buying alcoholic drinks, and people rushed to stores to grab what they could.

Fears of possible bans also sparked panic buying in Tampico, Ciudad Madero and Altamira, Tamaulipas on Tuesday.

In Mexico City, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum was forced to make it clear on Twitter that “No one has declared a ban” after images of signs in stores indicating that sales would be halted until April 30 began. go around social networks.

“I ask stores not to close or put conditions on the sale of alcoholic beverages,” she said. “If a borough decides to do so, we will make announcements. “

Other states that stop production or limit sales include Tabasco, Yucatán, Sonora, Quintana Roo, Campeche and Aguascalientes.

Beer distributor Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma has suspended production at its Coahuila plant and the Heineken group has stopped producing all the brands it brews and bottles in Mexico, including Tecate, Indio, XX, Carta Blanca, Affligem, Sol, Miller Lite, Lagunitas, Coors Light and Heineken.

Suspension of non-essential activities is a federal government strategy to mitigate the spread of Covid-19. As of Thursday, there were 1,378 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Mexico and it had killed 37.
