Job objective:

Provide leadership and management of the packaging department and oversee the planned packaging operations, including the packaging of all company products in accordance with company SOPs, achieve packaging quality indicators target, perform preventive maintenance of all packaging equipment and develop, lead and plan packaging teams.

This position is responsible for analyzing existing procedures and streamlining activities to meet sales and operational needs. This position also identifies opportunities for process improvement; implements other methods to increase efficiency; provides the highest level of product and process quality assurance; reduces costs and improves overall efficiency.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the packaging of all AleSmith products in accordance with company SOPs, quality measures, efficiency standards and best manufacturing practices
  • Ensures that all packaging operations, equipment, SOPs and practices comply with industry best manufacturing practices, OSHA safety requirements, FSMA requirements and other government and industry standards
  • Engages in constant communication with members of the operations, purchasing and sales team regarding packing schedules, actual releases versus planned releases, schedule changes and anticipated delays and ” order fulfillment
  • Provides vision, leadership, planning, project coordination and management for the continued development of an effective packaging team
  • Oversees a strong training and development program for all team members to ensure performance and continued growth at the highest level
  • Establishes and oversees a robust preventive maintenance program for all packaging equipment, which includes scheduled maintenance and lubrication according to manufacturer’s recommendations, weekly cleaning and degreasing, management of spare parts inventory, evaluation quarterly risk and downtime monitoring
  • Achieve financial goals by forecasting labor needs, planning expenses, analyzing costs and material discrepancies, and initiating corrective actions
  • Establishes and tracks production, efficiency, quality, use and loss of products and materials, downtime and other KPIs and reports to the brewery operations manager on a weekly basis
  • Plans, coordinates and oversees the physical count of all available packaging materials in a timely, organized, well-communicated and accurate manner
  • Achieves strategic goals by gathering relevant business, financial, service and operating information and using it to identify opportunities for improvement, as well as the development and implementation of best practices
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge through continuing education, reviewing professional publications, building professional networks and benchmarking leading practices
  • Provides and maintains quality service by meeting the highest level of customer service standards, analyzing and resolving quality and customer service issues, identifying trends and recommending system improvements
  • Establishes positive working relationships with all crew members, supplier partners and distributors
  • Works closely with crew members at all levels to address functional challenges and interpersonal conflicts in a constructive and positive manner
  • Lead and coordinate continuous improvement activities / projects and coach teams in their continuous improvement efforts

Minimum skills:

  • At least 21 years old
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite
  • Proficiency in inventory management and manufacturing software
  • Knowledge of the main drivers and metrics of inventory performance, rotations and contributions to margins
  • Forklift and hand truck certified or willing to become
  • Demonstrated knowledge of packaging equipment and practices
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills to organize workload, delegate responsibilities, recruit, interview, select, train, evaluate and execute corrective actions for staff
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask and manage competing priorities
  • Highly detail-oriented with the ability to perform missions both accurately and efficiently
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as presentation skills
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, planning and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work with hazardous cleaning chemicals
  • Ability to regularly lift 55 lbs and stand for extended periods
  • Availability to work occasionally evenings, weekends and / or holidays to meet deadlines and during high volume work periods

  • A passion for craft beer and knowledge of the brewing industry preferred

Education and / or experience:

High school diploma or general education diploma (GED). A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in a packaging management role in a commercial brewery; or an equivalent combination of experience and training required. Experience in a regional or larger craft brewery preferably.
